5 Powerful Tips to Help Students Overcome Creative Blocks

Struggling with a creative block? Overcome frustration and spark inspiration with tips on brainstorming, trying “bad” ideas, and breaking through barriers.

Have you ever stared at a blank page waiting for an idea to magically pop into your head, but nothing happens? I think many students have experienced this. Whether it’s writing, drawing, or even coming up with a fun TikTok video, creative blocks can feel like hitting a wall.

But don’t worry, because I’ve learned a few tricks in my creative journey to help you climb over that wall (or maybe chip your way through it). Here are five things to try when you’re struggling with a creative block.

1. Take a break from the project

Sometimes, the harder you try to force something, the more stuck you feel. That’s when you know it’s time to step away. Go for a walk, listen to your favorite playlist, or even scroll Instagram (but not for too long).

Giving your brain a rest can help new ideas sneak in when you’re not expecting them. Even just five minutes of doing something relaxing can reset your mind. You’ll be surprised how often inspiration strikes when you’re not actively looking for it.

2. Try something new

When I’m out of ideas, having a completely different creative outlet helps. It could be as simple as doodling or experimenting with a new recipe when I’m stuck on a writing piece.

Switching things up tricks your brain into thinking outside the box. Trying a new hobby or activity can spark creativity in unexpected ways. You never know—that random idea from baking or painting might be just what you need for your original project.

3. Don’t fear the "bad ideas"

One important thing I’ve realized is not every idea has to be perfect! So let yourself create without overthinking it. Sometimes the "bad" ideas lead to something amazing or get your creative juices flowing again, at least. Even if an idea doesn’t work out, it’s a step closer to finding one that does. Mistakes are just proof that you’re trying, and that’s what really matters.

4. Talk out the problem

Have you ever noticed how explaining your problem to someone else suddenly makes the solution clearer? Talk to a friend or sibling or even just say your thoughts out loud to help untangle the mess in your head. (Shoutout to my little brother for being my sounding board more times than I can count!)

Sometimes hearing someone else’s perspective, especially someone who knows you well, can spark a completely new idea. Don’t underestimate how helpful a quick conversation can be.

5. Be patient with yourself

Lastly, remember that everyone deals with creative blocks. It doesn’t mean you’re not talented or you’ll never have a good idea again. Creativity isn’t a straight line, and sometimes you just need to wait for inspiration to come back. Being hard on yourself only makes the block worse, so take a deep breath and trust the process.

Next time you’re feeling creatively stuck on a school or personal project, try these tips. Remember, creative blocks are normal, and every artist, writer, or creator has been there. What matters is that you keep going, keep experimenting, and trust yourself to figure it out. Who knows—maybe your next big idea is just around the corner. You’re capable of so much more than you think, so don’t give up. Your creativity will always find a way back to you!

CollegeXpress helped me gain interest in many colleges/universities and many scholarships. I would say the most helpful thing CollegeXpress has done for me is sending me emails that tell me certain types of colleges are interested in me as well as emails about scholarships that I can look at and possibly apply for.

I'm a senior in high school, and CollegeXpress has helped me in so many ways this year in trying to navigate the process of deciding and committing to a university. The COVID-19 Student Resource Center has helped me many times with the most up-to-date and accurate information, along with financial aid and student life [advice]. During these uncertain times, CollegeXpress has been a great recourse to relieve the stress as a senior. Along with the COVID-19 Student Resource Center, I'm constantly using the extremely helpful tools off the site to aid me during this stressful process. Tools like the lists and rankings of universities have been the most beneficial. I've also used the site to receive expert advice on topics like financial aid. Finally, CollegeXpress has helped me easily apply for several scholarships. I'm thankful to be given the chance to win a scholarship to lessen the burden of my college debt.
