How to Balance Multiple Leadership Positions in High School

Being the leader of a club in high school is stressful enough, but what about multiple? Here's some advice on how to balance all your responsibilities.

Being involved in multiple clubs as a high school student can be a great way to meet new people, learn new skills, and help your school and community. And if you target your interests toward your college and career goals, it looks great on your college applications and résumé. However, assuming the presidency or other leadership roles of multiple clubs can quickly become stressful and overwhelming. Leading multiple organizations across your school is a huge responsibility, and if you don’t manage your roles well, there are many people who’ll be affected. Here’s how to avoid stress, manage your time and responsibilities, and be a good leader in high school.

The importance of planning and delegation

Prioritizing and effectively planning your time is one of the most crucial aspects of managing multiple leadership roles. Break down the many tasks and responsibilities you have into manageable chunks and set attainable goals to reduce stress and boost your productivity. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed by the number of things you have to do. To ensure you’re making the most of your time and meeting deadlines, make a schedule or to-do list. It’s also acceptable to delegate tasks to other club members if you clearly communicate your expectations and monitor their progress. Leaders of school clubs often feel they must do everything and quickly become overwhelmed. But there are other people in officer positions for a reason, so be sure to delegate, delegate, delegate!

Planning club roles in advance

Setting boundaries for yourself when delegating is yet another effective strategy for avoiding stress as a high school leader. This requires learning to say no when necessary and being realistic about how much time and effort you can devote to each club. Don't be afraid to take a break or ask for help when you need it, because your mental health and well-being are more important than your club duties. You can also stay focused and motivated in your club roles by finding ways to relax, such as exercising, meditating, or spending time with friends and family. Develop close relationships with your club advisor and officers. When you’re feeling stressed, communicate how you are feeling so they can help you work toward a solution.

The importance of communication

Communication is essential when organizing your duties as a high school club leader. Maintain open lines of communication with your clubmates, advisors, and other school administrators, including responding to emails and messages, scheduling regular meetings or check-ins to discuss club activities and progress, and so on. Additionally, you should ensure other club members have easy access to detailed records of the club's finances, events, and other important information. Find a communication platform that works for you and everyone else. You can utilize Google Calendar, Remind, Schoology, Notion, and so much more.

Other leadership skills

When juggling multiple clubs, being a good leader is just as important as having good communication and organizational skills. This includes modeling a positive attitude and work ethic for other members, creating a sense of community and inclusivity within the club, and being a role model. It's also important to pay attention to what other members have to say and be open to new ideas and points of view. A good leader inspires others to be more involved and work together toward common objectives by creating a supportive and collaborative atmosphere. Whether you know it or not, you have a whole club that looks up to you because of your role. This means you have a lot of power, and you must use it to benefit the overall well-being and opportunities for the club.

The importance of being active in your clubs

Being proactive and taking initiative are other important qualities of a good leader. This means devising strategies to address the club's potential difficulties or opportunities. For instance, if you notice fewer people attending club meetings toward the end of the year, you might come up with ways to make them more interesting or think about holding events outside of school hours to fit members' schedules. You can help your club thrive and have a positive impact on your school and community by being proactive and creative with your ideas.

Cultivate a sense of community, exhibit a positive attitude and work ethic, and take proactive steps to address challenges and opportunities as they arise. You can make the most of your experience as a club leader and leave a lasting impression on your school and community if you keep these suggestions in mind.

I'm a senior in high school, and CollegeXpress has helped me in so many ways this year in trying to navigate the process of deciding and committing to a university. The COVID-19 Student Resource Center has helped me many times with the most up-to-date and accurate information, along with financial aid and student life [advice]. During these uncertain times, CollegeXpress has been a great recourse to relieve the stress as a senior. Along with the COVID-19 Student Resource Center, I'm constantly using the extremely helpful tools off the site to aid me during this stressful process. Tools like the lists and rankings of universities have been the most beneficial. I've also used the site to receive expert advice on topics like financial aid. Finally, CollegeXpress has helped me easily apply for several scholarships. I'm thankful to be given the chance to win a scholarship to lessen the burden of my college debt.

For me, CollegeXpress has given me a valuable tool to use with my students to explore colleges easily beyond objective data. It helps me find colleges for students that fit their needs and wants that aren’t quite so black and white. It's a wealth of knowledge, and the Type-A side of me loves all the lists and the fact that I know they're coming from folks who know what they're talking about. I share it with colleagues and students alike, and it's always well received.
