Video: How to Stay Healthy in College

In this video, student vlogger Lucia offers her best advice for staying healthy in college.

A lot of college students fear the freshman 15, and Lucia has confirmed that it’s so real. She also discovered that a lot of students neglect their health in general! It’s super important to take care of your body so you can have a sharper mind, and with these tips, you can definitely achieve that. Check out the video below!

Assess your workout options

Every college is different, and your resources aren’t always going to be super close to you. If you’re near the gym, great! But if not, you can work out in your dorm room, common area, around campus, or even at the track.

Schedule your workout

Plan your workouts around your busy college schedule so you can’t make any excuses! This also allows you rest days and the ability to catch up on schoolwork or your social life. Pro tip: try working out in the first half of your day to boost your energy and start off the day on the right foot.

Find a workout buddy

Find a gym buddy; it’ll make it much more enjoyable to get in a workout. Also, it will make you feel better about skipping out on a social event for working out because you’re combining the two!

Make healthy choices

Here are some quick tips for making good choices in the dining hall and in your dorm.

  1. Eat around campus. If you can, try to branch out from the dining halls and eat at other healthy places on campus. Lucia suggests buying dining dollars if your school offers them.
  2. Make healthy choices at the dining hall by avoiding fried foods and desserts and instead heading over to the salad bar.
  3. Drink a lot of water. College campuses are loaded with soft drinks and sugary options, but water is always a good choice. More water=more energy. More energy = more study time!
  4. Eat three meals a day! A lot of students develop unhealthy eating schedules because they barely eat or have their meals at weird times in the day. Keep your metabolism and energy in line by eating multiple well-balanced meals and adding in snacks.
  5. Keep healthy snacks in your room. Then if you’re running low on time and can’t make it to the dining hall, you won’t miss an opportunity to eat.
  6. Sleep at least seven hours a night. College can be stressful, so getting sleep is crucial. Sleep will help you recover from a long day of studying and refresh your mind for the next day. If you’re overtired, you won’t be able to retain information as well. You also risk getting sick!
